Wet Blanket Alert! The Via Delamarketa

  Posted on   by   No comments

Ok, I was idealistic.  I had a dream that the Via Delarosa would be a long mountain climb to the top of Golgotha.  I thought as we walked to the top, we could meditate on our Savior’s most magnificent but horrific walk.  I imagined that along the stone pavement would be lined with ancient trees heading outside the city walls.  But quite the opposite…

Instead, the beginning of the climb had this “First Station” souvenir shop.  And little did I know that from this point to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, virtually every step of the road was marked by shop after shop of merchants selling their wares to pilgrim tourists.  It really didn’t leave much opportunity for solemn reflection.
